Oatmeal Mix-ins
The Tiny Kitchen Assistant eats oatmeal every morning. Every. Single. Morning.
Understandably, this can get a little bit boring. I’ve tried livening things up by mixing in cool stuff. His genius creation: Nutella and strawberries. I have to tell you, that’s pretty good, but it’s not an everyday breakfast.
I’m running out of ideas. Do you have anything creative to add to this list? So far we’ve tried all of these things in various combinations:
Fruit
- Raisins
- Frozen blueberries
- Strawberries
- Apples
- Bananas
- Canned peaches
- Dried cranberries
Crunchies
- Almonds
- Cashews
- Pistachios
- Trader Joe’s pumpkin granola
Flavors
- Brown sugar
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Nutella
- Mini chocolate chips
- Cocoa powder
What else can you think of? Suggestions are welcome.

I like cubed pears with LOTS of cinnamon. Or apple butter or pumpkin butter. My favorite though? Eggnog. I CAN’T WAIT.
My four-year-old likes hers with strawberries and brown sugar EVERY SINGLE DAY. If we’re out of strawberries, she’ll accept raisins instead. My husband likes prunes in his and sometimes maple syrup. But overall, we are a boring household of sameness. (I eat Grape Nuts every day–maybe you could try those for crunches?)
My favorite current oatmeal topping combo is dates, coconut flakes and chopped hazelnuts. Delicious. I am also a fan of almonds and dried cherries. Finally, a food writer friend introduced me to sauteeing thinly sliced apples with cinnamon and butter then topping oatmeal with that – it’s the gourmet version of the Quaker packets.
I knew I could count on you guys. Cubed pears? Eggnog? Maple syrup? Coconut? I know that there will be a very happy Tiny Kitchen Assistant in the next few mornings.
