Training: Tapering and Slacking

Slacking During Half Marathon Taper

I hiked up and down this cliff. So that’s something.

This will be a brief post. Why? Because I haven’t done anything this week.

Well, that’s not entirely true. I did my PT exercises and spent quality time with my foam roller. I went to Pilates on Wednesday. But the truth is that I haven’t run a step all week. I even went so far as to ditch my team run (the first time all season) so we could go to Santa Cruz for the weekend.

Then again, I’m going to argue (weakly) that a weekend of walking in soft sand and running around playing beach baseball with a six-year-old has to count for something. And even if it doesn’t… well, so what? I needed some time away. Between work, Team in Training and preparation for next week’s conference, I’ve been burning the candle at both ends. Sometimes “sleeping in” until 7:00 AM on a Saturday is enough to reset the stress-o-meter and clear the head.

So… what have you been up to? I know that one of my regular readers rocked his 10k today. Anyone else?

  1. I think it totally counts. We had our ten mile run on Saturday and there was a 5k downtown that a few people wanted to do, so we ran seven, then finished with the 5k. So it’ll likely be the worst 5k time I’ll ever have, but it was good motivation to gut it out for those last three miles.

If I could, I would train exclusively in races. They’re much more fun than just slogging through the usual miles.

Looking forward to this weekend and the final long run before race day!
