The Hidden Calories

How many ounces are in that glass?

Congratulations! You’ve made it through most of December, which means that the bulk of the eating and drinking is now behind you. You sat at Christmas dinner — pants already too tight from Thanksgiving, a dozen holiday parties and countless cookies consumed over the course of 30 days — and you swore that you would watch what you ate from now on. And you have. For the past few days your calorie count has been low, and you’re just starting to feel good about those resolutions that loom on the horizon.

But what about your plans on New Year’s Eve? How many calories will you consume as you kiss 2010 goodbye?

Behold, there is a calculator for these things. Martinis? Margaritas? Wine? It’s all in there.

But remember: the calculator measures each serving of wine as 4 ounces. Wine Spectator says that a standard serving is 5 ounces, or five wine servings per 750 ml bottle. But wine glasses vary in size, even from the same retailer. Crate and Barrel wine glasses range in size from 10 ounces to as large as 20 ounces; be sure to know the size of your glass if you really want to properly estimate the calories that you’ve consumed.
