365 Fresh Starts

A Blog About Life

We've been conditioned to expect things to be all or nothing. We make dramatic resolutions on December 31st that we break by January 2, and then feel terrible about ourselves. We think that we can't change at all because our annual, dramatic attempts at change just don't work.

We get 365 fresh starts each year.

What Would Betty Do Logo Creamy Tangy Cole Slaw

I’d been looking for a lightly creamy cole slaw that doesn’t weigh down the benefits of raw cabbage with an ocean of fat and calories. Unable to find one online, I whipped up my own. I try very hard to avoid processed foods — things with ingredients not found in nature. Mayo pretty much violates […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Vacation Deprivation

When was the last time you took a vacation? I don’t mean the last time you went away somewhere, or the last time that you didn’t go into the office. I mean the last time you left the office and disconnected from the office for more than 24 hours. A friend recently sent me a […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo What’s in Season? September

In most of the country, the early days of September remind you that summer is drawing to a close. In northern California, September is still squarely in the summer season, leaving us more than a little bit surprised that the summer fruits have vanished from the market. Our “Corn Man” will be switching to apple […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Ironman

As a kid, I loved Wide World of Sports. This was before ESPN2 showed every obscure sport or pseudo-sport known to mankind. I knew more about diving, ski jumping and boxing than any 7-year-old had any business knowing, but my favorite sport of all was the Ironman. I loved these people. I was just a […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Week 14, Angel Island

With my husband and son away, I had the rare opportunity to do whatever I wanted with my free time. So what did I do? I ran a 12k trail race on Angel Island. Of course. Doesn’t everyone get up at 6:00 AM to run races, even on days where they can finally sleep in? […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Pan-Seared Pork Chops with Balsamic Fig Sauce

It’s fig season in California! Fresh figs are amazing, especially when topped with a dollop of goat cheese and roasted at 450 for 5 minutes until the cheese just starts to turn golden. Dried figs aren’t designed for the same straight-up sweetness, but they make a nice addition to sauces. Ingredients Light olive oil 4 […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Water Safety for Kids

The rapidly approaching Labor Day weekend often means fun getaways to waterfront locations. It seems like a good time for a water safety reminder, compliments of Children’s Medical Center. Did you know that: Infants (up to 1 year) can drown in as little as one inch of water? Preschoolers (1-5 years) are most likely to […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo How to Choose a Sports Bra

Ladies, I didn’t think I’d be going here so soon, but the more time I spend at running and kickboxing, the more I realize that there is a sports bra crisis in this country, and someone needs to say something about it. Because good lord, ladies, you just shouldn’t be bouncing around like that. Why […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Week 13

I slacked off a bit this week. I reached a point where I knew that if I stuck to the schedule, my work-life stress level would skyrocket, and decided that it was best to just take it easy and go with the flow. The Plan Monday, 8/16: 30 minute easy run Tuesday, 8/17: Kickboxing plus […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo In a Pickle

If there’s one food-related love that I share with my grandmother, it’s pickles. There was never a Sunday dinner without some form of pickle on the table. Betty and I would debate the merits of the pickle du jour — too much dill, not enough garlic — while everyone else ignored them entirely. Wandering through […] Read More
