Training: Holiday Weekend Edition

Holiday Weekend Training

I’ll keep this brief since we’re away for the holiday weekend.

  • Last week — August 18 to 24 — the Tiny Kitchen Assistant rode more than 44 miles on his bike. You read that right: in seven days the 6-year-old willingly rode more than 40 miles, and wanted to do even more. He had three long rides: 11.4 miles, 11.4 miles and 16.6 miles. He now thinks he can tackle the full 35+ mile Iron Horse Trail near home.
  • I got a hitch-mounted bike carrier for my car. I took the bikes with us this weekend. Fingers crossed that the bikes don’t come loose on the freeway or bridge and I’m actually riding as you read this.
  • The new Thule T2 carrier is cool and easy to use, but it weighs approximately 3,572,813 pounds (+/- 5 pounds). I wrenched my back during installation and spent three days in serious pain and unable to exercise. Just transitioning from sitting to standing was difficult enough. I’m happy to be up and moving again!

Enjoy your holiday weekend, everyone!

My husband has a Thule and yes, that is exactly how much it weighs. On the up side, he hasn’t lost a bike yet!

Once it’s on, it’s extremely easy to get the bikes on and off, and very secure. But… because it rides low it bottoms out on the entry/exit to nearly every parking lot or driveway, and it’s positioned in such a way that you can’t get into the trunk without removing the bikes. Not practical. In hindsight, maybe I should have gotten one that swings outward, but the salesperson sold me on the “easy” factor of the lower tray.
