Marshmallow Crispy Treats

They look lovely, don’t they?

Did you know that you can make those yummy, addictive marshmallow crispy treats without the usual cereal in the blue box? It’s true! I’ve made them with all kinds of light, crunchy cereals, but the most aesthetically lovely of all is Gorilla Munch.

[As a comedy aside, the Tiny Kitchen Assistant refers to these as “Gorilla Balls.” He has no idea why this might be funny.]

When selecting your cereal, consider your presentation. Gorilla Munch looks lovely, but you have to pull the munchies apart in abstract shapes; cutting with a knife crushes the spheres and ruins the effect. Special K works well if you’re looking for something different that’s more knife friendly.

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp butter
  • 1 bag marshmallows
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 cups cereal

What a strange name for a cereal.

Instructions

Melt the butter and marshmallows in the microwave for 1 minute. Stir. Microwave for another minute. Stir. If the marshmallows and butter have mixed to form a smooth, sticky sauce, you’re ready to go. Otherwise, microwave for another 30 seconds. Stir.

Add vanilla extract; mix to combine.

Add cereal. Stir until coated.

Press coated cereal into a greased 9 x 9 inch pan (if you’re fancy) or smooth onto a sheet of parchment paper (if you’re lazy and/or prefer a free form method). Cool completely before cutting or pulling apart.

One of the easiest and most loved desserts that you can make.

Results

Delicious, as always. The Tiny Kitchen Assistant always insists that I make some version of the treats for his birthday party. I doubt that anyone would pass them up on a holiday cookie buffet, either. Oh sure, it stretches the limits of true cookies, but nobody cares in the sugar grab of December.

Oh.my.lanta. These were incredible! I added a bit of Uncle Sam to the mix because we were just shy with Gorilla Munch. Can’t stop eating them!

I know! And truly, they work with all cereals. Allow me to mention that you can cause serious damage with graham cereal and a handful of mini chocolate chips thrown in.
