After several weeks of missing class due to my viral malise,* my Zumba buddy graciously invited me to accompany her and another mom on a Monday morning hike. It’s a reasonable trail with moderate elevation gain on the top of a breezy but not too windy hill.
It quickly became obvious that we hadn’t really accounted for the recent rains.
With every step, my trail shoes were increasingly caked with heavy, wet clay. How heavy? Observe:
I took this picture after I’d already whacked about five pounds of wet clay off of each foot, and I still had another five to go.
On the bright side, I made it through my first hike of my recovery, and with clay-weighted shoes, to boot! I can’t even begin to explain how good it felt to be outside, in the sun and breeze, actually doing something. I may not be ready to run quite yet, but it’s a good start.
I spent Wednesday at Pilates and continue to realize that no matter how tired I am or how flat I’m feeling, a good stretch makes me feel infinitely better.
On Friday, I let the kids run me ragged at t-ball practice. Oh, you say, how much of a workout can t-ball really be? If you ask this question, you haven’t been to t-ball. It’s a high-stakes game of throwing, catching, watching everyone all at once and shouting, “No! Don’t swing at his head/throw the ball at his head/stomp on his hand with cleats!” Danger lurks along every base path. This is not exaggeration. I leave feeling as mentally and physically drained as if I’d played the game myself.
I have aspirations of running this week. Four weeks until my 8K in DC. I need to get my body motivated and my butt in gear if I hope to be anything other than last place in this one.
How did your week go?
* I think it may need to be officially termed “viral malaise.” “Fatigue” just makes me sound like a slacker. “Malaise” sounds like a grand Victorian illness.
