I’ll start by explaining that until Saturday, I didn’t even know that Hungarians had their own bacon. Our Hungarian friends invited us to a late afternoon beach bonfire and cookout, I assumed that we’d be having the usual hamburgers and hot dogs. Little did I know that we’d be grilling 1/2″ thick strips of the most fantastic bacon I’ve ever eaten.
I’ve found an online source for the bacon. Otto’s Hungarian deli in Burbank seems to have the real deal. Scroll down about 3/4 of the way down the product page and see what this stuff looks like pre-sliced. It’s fabulous.
My friend ate hers with Dijon mustard and red onions on a thick slice of bread, and I have to tell you that this combination sounds weird but is one of the most delicious grilled meals that I’ve ever eaten, and I’m not a carnivore by nature.
If you can get your hands on some of this bacon, I highly recommend it.

My Hungarian father would heat the Solona over the coals. Once it started to get hot enough to drip he would put in over a piece of rye bread with peppers and onions on it. Now I know its probably not the most healthy food in the world but it was wonderful! I recommend drinking some wine to neutralize the fat. Besides-wine goes with everything, does it??
