365 Fresh Starts

A Blog About Life

We've been conditioned to expect things to be all or nothing. We make dramatic resolutions on December 31st that we break by January 2, and then feel terrible about ourselves. We think that we can't change at all because our annual, dramatic attempts at change just don't work.

We get 365 fresh starts each year.

What Would Betty Do Logo Broiled Yellow Squash

Squash and zucchini are plentiful, but ideas for what to do with them tend to elude me. Last weekend, my farmer’s market was practically giving away beautiful yellow squash. I decided to just throw something together and came up with this recipe. Broiling can be dangerous; I’ve burned more than my share of food over […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Learning to Cook

Because I post recipes online, it seems only natural to assume that I learned how to cook by watching my mother and my grandmother. Wrong. While both cooked, neither one of them was a particularly stellar chef. My grandmother, for example, didn’t have any spices in the house, including salt and pepper. My mother had […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Taking a Hike

I live in northern California, and October is the perfect time of year for a hike: the summer heat has given way to cooler temperatures, but the winter rains haven’t yet made a muddy mess of the trails. When most people think of hikes, they assume they need specialized hiking boots, a day pack and […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Back On My Feet

I got the best news this week (best news under the circumstances, anyway): I can put weight on my foot again. Yes, I’m still confined to the boot, but a return to mobility — even restricted mobility — is very good news. I’m still sticking with my stretching regimen, which helps to work out  some […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Pasta Rustica

It’s been years since I last made this recipe, but I stumbled across it while looking for something to do with the onslaught of fresh tomatoes coming from my garden. I’ve made some modifications to the original, not the least of which involves substituting cherry tomatoes for the original romas. The meal looks best when […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Vitamin D in the News

There’s been a lot of media coverage about vitamin D and the health effects that stem from a vitamin D deficiency. Some sources have even gone so far as to suggest that you go without sunscreen to increase your exposure to sunlight, a primary source of vitamin D. Why is vitamin D so important? Studies […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Cardio Kickboxing

Those who know me well are probably surprised that it’s taken me so long to post about kickboxing, a workout that I adore. I’ve waited, partly because I didn’t want this to be the Running and Kickboxing blog, and partly because in my experience, there can be tremendous variation in class style based on the […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Race Day

This is the hard post to write. Today was race day, the day that I’d been training for since April. Instead of waking before dawn and queueing in the corrals, I was awake in bed with a massive foot cramp inside the giant boot. Instead of running, I went to get my flu shot. Instead […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Cabbage Salad with Ginger Vinaigrette

This is an easy side dish that works well when served with pork tenderloin or chicken marinated in teriyaki sauce. It’s an easy and unexpectedly light side dish as the season starts leaning towards heavier meals. The salad is slightly less crisp, but more flavorful after a night in the fridge. Ingredients 3/4 cup rice […] Read More
