365 Fresh Starts

A Blog About Life

We've been conditioned to expect things to be all or nothing. We make dramatic resolutions on December 31st that we break by January 2, and then feel terrible about ourselves. We think that we can't change at all because our annual, dramatic attempts at change just don't work.

We get 365 fresh starts each year.

What Would Betty Do Logo Diving In

When I was a kid, I would spend my entire summer at the pool, splashing around in the water with my friends. But even in the days where I spent nearly every waking minute in the water, I rarely did any actual swimming. Sure, I can swim; I passed my swimming test to earn access […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Finally, A Goal

I’m a deadline-oriented (some would say deadline-obsessed) kind of girl. While I’d love to say that I have all the motivation in the world, the truth is that I need something to work towards. Something like a race, maybe. The Plan Monday: Weights and stretching Tuesday: Pilates Wednesday: Elliptical Thursday: Off Friday: Loads of housework […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Nancy’s Ginger Cookies

My friend Nancy makes fantastic ginger cookies, and years ago I claimed the recipe for my own. These are chewy and delicious. Ingredients 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 sticks unsalted butter 1 egg 1/3 cup molasses 2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp allspice 1 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp baking soda 1/2 […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo In Your Eyes

I’ll confess right upfront that I have a fear of eye doctors in the same way that most people fear dentists, so I could happily go for years without an eye exam. But I do have the common sense to know that staring at a computer screen all day, every day, isn’t the best thing […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Feeling Like a Blob?

This is the time of year where it’s easy to feel like a blob. The days are short, and no one wants to get up in the dark or go running in the cold. Halloween candy leads to Thanksgiving dinner, and before you know it the holiday parties and holiday cookies begin. I saw this […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Easy, it’s Not

A week’s worth of workouts appear to have been undone by a weekend of chasing a 4-year-old through museums. I’m achy and not terribly happy about it. The Plan Monday: Swim Tuesday: 30 minutes elliptical, 15 weights, 15 stretching Wednesday: Walking, stretching Thursday: Off Friday: 20 minutes TRX Saturday: Museum walking Sunday: Museum walking I […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Biscotti

December is cookie season! Back before the Tiny Kitchen Assistant came along, I would have an annual holiday cookie party. I would spend days baking a dozen different varieties, and then everyone we knew would come over and gorge themselves. These days I don’t have quite the same amount of time on my hands, but […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo No-Chip Nail Polish

Your hands are only slightly less prominent than your face. Using this logic, you’d think that I’d get regular manicures to keep my fingers looking as good as my always-painted toes. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. Don’t get me wrong, I love the look of a nice, simple manicure, but I’m the […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo What’s in Season? December

Looking for something different to bring to a gathering this holiday season? Pears hold the key. Mix pears with blue cheese in a tart, salad or even just sliced as part of a cheese and fruit platter. There might not be much sunshine, but there’s plenty of citrus. You can be sure to get your […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Kid Fitness: Starting Them Early

I have a very active four-year-old son. He’s in constant motion from the time he wakes up until the moment he falls asleep. We watch very little television and his only exposure to video games (so far) involves Wii Sports. I know that he’s an anomaly, and not everyone is so lucky. I have great […] Read More
