365 Fresh Starts

A Blog About Life

We've been conditioned to expect things to be all or nothing. We make dramatic resolutions on December 31st that we break by January 2, and then feel terrible about ourselves. We think that we can't change at all because our annual, dramatic attempts at change just don't work.

We get 365 fresh starts each year.

What Would Betty Do Logo Pineapple Curry

Back in April, I was in DC for a conference and got the chance to go out for an excellent Thai dinner with the ever-cool Dr. KCĀ and the cutest little baby in the entire DC metro area. I scanned the menu and quickly spotted something that sounded uniquely wonderful: pineapple curry. Yum! As it turned […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Betty Says: Ditching Your Friends

Today’s question comes from one of my Texas Bettys: Dear Betty, I’m training for an upcoming race with some fellow Bettys in December. Running is new to several of them & they are racing the half. I did 5 halfs last year & really (really!) want to complete a full. Am I a “bad” Betty […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Six Weeks to Go

We are a mere six weeks from race day. I don’t want to admit that I’m feeling unprepared, but holy cow, I’m feeling unprepared. Tuesday night was fartlek night. Fartlek is supposed to be Swedish for “speed play,” but frankly I think it’s all a big Swedish joke to give us a ridiculous-sounding name to […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Caprese Pasta Salad

I love tomatoes. To me, there’s no better part of summer than eating sun-warmed tomatoes right from the vine. Of course, some people actually want their tomatoes to be part of something bigger, like an actual recipe, and caprese salad is a classic example. But you can’t really do a classic caprese with the 4 […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Seasonal Eats: September

On warm September days, it’s easy to forget that summer is ending. And then I realize that the stone fruit vendors have already left the market, with Corn Man soon to follow. And where did that butternut squash come from? What happened to summer? Nonetheless, it’s still a good month for the market. You can […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Betty Says: How’s That Hangover?

With Labor Day rapidly approaching, we have one last hurrah for sun + alcohol = misery. Dear Betty, What do you suggest for a hangover induced by consumption of too many glasses of sangria? This information isn’t particularly useful for me right now, but I really could have used it on July 5. – Miserable […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Better Late Than Never

I never quit got around to writing my usual Sunday night training recap this week, mostly because I was a zombie by the time we got home from our weekend at the coast. Let’s start with Tuesday night and hills, hills, hills. And did I mention the hills? Our coach had the great idea of […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Try Something New: Fried Plantains

I love Cuban food. Love it. I’m not a fan of the heat and humidity of Florida, but get absolutely giddy about the prospect of scoring some excellent Cuban food. One of the best parts of any Cuban meal? Fried plantains, or platanos maduros. Yet for all of my love of them, I’d never actually […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Figs and Topless Dinner

I love figs. I didn’t realize that I loved figs until I was well into my 30s, which makes the revelation all the more powerful and magical. Recently, at the farmer’s market, I walked past a booth and literally stopped and did a double take. Arranged on a single, plain table were baskets upon baskets […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Betty Says: It’s the Planning

Sometimes it’s the simple questions that get right to the heart of the matter. What’s the hardest part of cooking? – Curious in Chicago Hi Curious, Today I stood in the supermarket, staring at the produce aisle. I didn’t know what to buy because I couldn’t come up with a creative meal idea for the […] Read More
