365 Fresh Starts

A Blog About Life

We've been conditioned to expect things to be all or nothing. We make dramatic resolutions on December 31st that we break by January 2, and then feel terrible about ourselves. We think that we can't change at all because our annual, dramatic attempts at change just don't work.

We get 365 fresh starts each year.

What Would Betty Do Logo Betty Says: Bite Me

This week on the Facebook page for Run Like a MotherĀ (an excellent book for anyone who feels like their fitness needs to compete with work, family and that massive to-do list), they asked: So let’s talk trail running this afternoon. Curious: are you scared of it? If so, why? Animals, injury, getting lost, falling, something […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Turkey Trot Traffic

As you’ve probably noticed in recent weeks, I’ve spent very little time running. While I’ve been going to the gym and to Zumba, I have to admit that my overall workout plan has been subject to a bad case of what I’ve seen referred to by its clinical term, fuckarounditis. Let’s face it: I need […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo “Why Not Make Chicken Soup” Soup

The other night, after finishing with our store-bought rotisserie chicken, my husband decided to take the carcass, toss it in our large stock pot, cover it with water and simmer. I steered clear of this process, what with being kind of squeamish about meat that resembles its original critter, so I didn’t realize that the […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Betty Says: Be Thankful

I know that everyone is writing Thanksgiving blog posts, but I still feel like I should share some of the things that I’m thankful for this year. In no particular order… I’m thankful for my health. I’m thankful for my smart, funny, self-sufficient little boy. I’m so proud of the person he’s becoming. I’m thankful […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Watching and Learning

This post isn’t going to have anything to do with my training. This week, I’m going to talk about other races. Last night, we were in Monterey for a corporate anniversary party. This morning, I got to see the Big Sur Half Marathon in progress. As we drove along the coastline on our way out […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo The Turkey

I know that people swear by all kinds of turkey cooking methods, but this is the only method I’ve ever used and it works beautifully. I don’t stuff my turkeys. I don’t baste. I don’t put anything under the skin. And in spite of all of the anecdotal evidence that says that my turkey should […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Betty Says: I Don’t Drink My Calories

This is the post in which I point out that perhaps the pot shouldn’t call the kettle black. On Saturday morning, I finished my Zumba class and headed for the supermarket to pick up a half a dozen ingredients for weekend meals. I stopped in Starbucks, ordered my one and only coffee shop drink (large […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Gym, Run, Walk, Zumba

I went to the gym on Monday. This, in itself, isn’t a big deal. The problem was that I got there about 5 minutes too late. Too late for what, you ask? Parking. You see, my 24 Hour FitnessĀ opened almost a year ago. What it has: a pool, tons of cardio equipment and a wide […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Sage Gravy

It seems sort of counterintuitive to give the gravy recipe before the turkey recipe, but it will make more sense next week when you pair this recipe with the turkey. Trust me. Ingredients 2 onions, sliced 1 Tbsp unsalted butter Kosher salt 32 ounces chicken broth or stock Gizzards and other turkey organs that I […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Betty Says: You Don’t Want to Run?

From the “I know the feeling” department. Dear Betty, I also ran Nike on October 16 and since then… well, I haven’t done anything. I don’t feel like running at all. Am I the only one? – Directionless in Denver Oh Directionless, I absolutely feel your pain. Didn’t you read my post on Sunday night? […] Read More
