365 Fresh Starts

A Blog About Life

We've been conditioned to expect things to be all or nothing. We make dramatic resolutions on December 31st that we break by January 2, and then feel terrible about ourselves. We think that we can't change at all because our annual, dramatic attempts at change just don't work.

We get 365 fresh starts each year.

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Try It

Kid With the Comeback The other day, at school dropoff, one of the kids came up to The Assistant: “Why do you ride your bike every day? That’s so stupid.” He practically spit out the last word. “And you’re a stupid dumbhead for doing it.” I was enraged. I was defensive. I wanted to scream, “Nuh-uh! […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Balsamic Strawberry “Pizza”

Balsamic Strawberries and Mozzarella This recipe is modified from one that I saw at the farmer’s market. Their recipe was for a balsamic strawberry and mozzarella crostini appetizer. Let me be upfront about this: while that sounded absolutely amazing, I don’t do appetizers. I’m lucky that I can get a one-course meal onto the table […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: How Far?

Bike Errand Distances I’ve had quite a few of you email me and ask questions about the bike riding. Things like: “Riding your bike? Don’t you live in the suburbs? That can’t be practical.” The flatter roads of my town seem vastly more practical than riding the hills of San Francisco, but that doesn’t stop […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Tequila Lime Chicken

Crockpot Roasted Tequila Lime Chicken I’ve done the crockpot roasted chicken before, and while it comes out tender and juicy, it’s not exactly flavorful. Of course, the easy way to fix that is with a marinade. One of the easiest roll-home-from-little-league meals is anything Mexican. I can have black beans defrosted in the fridge, ready […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Fitbit Reviews: One, Flex and Aria

Fitbit Product Review I’m a data-geeky sort of person, so when I heard about all of the things that Fitbit could track — steps, sleep, floors climbed, active minutes, hydration, calories — I was more than a little excited. No, I don’t really need all of that information, but I do love gamification of my […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Training: Monthly Bike Stats

Replacing the Car The stats are in for May: I logged 129.5 miles on my bike that would have otherwise been spent in the car. That was over the course of 20 days; the remaining 11 days of the month were spent in Texas (seven days) or on day or weekend trips to bikeless locales […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo The Perfect Summer Side

Fruit Salad Can we forget about the food pyramid for a moment? Can we ignore the fact that we’re supposed to be eating both fruits and vegetables? Because for a few short, glorious weeks in late May and early June in California, it’s all about fruit. Ever since last weekend when we picked 14 pounds of […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Bleu Cheese Dressing

Alton Brown Blue Cheese Dressing Let’s pretend that we’re at a restaurant. The helpful server appears tableside and starts listing the day’s specials. If she happens to utter the words, “bleu cheese,” I immediately fall deaf to all other options and close the menu. Now, I also have an obsession with buffalo wing sauce, but […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Pepper and Egg Sandwiches

Grilled Bell Pepper and Egg Sandwich I’ve been looking for more (any?) meatless options in our meal plan, and when I stumbled across Bryn’s post about grilled bell pepper and egg sandwiches over at Writes4Food.com, I had to give it a try. I did make a few changes, not the least of which was serving […] Read More

What Would Betty Do Logo Betty Says: Awkward Conversations

What Did You Say? Today, you can advise me. Not to beat a dead horse about this whole bike riding thing, but I’ve noticed something very interesting. Biking with the kiddo: Aww, cute. Biking solo, not kitted out in racing gear: What’s wrong with you and why aren’t you driving a car? But the most […] Read More
