Life in California
1. Last week, I got the chance to speak at a conference in Pacific Grove, California, which is one of the most beautiful spots I’ve ever visited. There’s a waterfront trail that’s so lovely that there’s just no excuse for sleeping in. It’s well worth an early morning walk when the winds are calm and the light is perfect.
2. I’ve enjoyed living in California for the past 15 years, but on Sunday night I realized that I went to the supermarket in sandals, yoga pants and a hoodie. It’s time to move out of state before I start wearing UGG boots with skirts, or decide that flip-flops are year-round footwear.
3. The drought has ensured that this is the worst allergy season ever in California, so awful that I can no longer sleep with the windows open because the pollen is so severe. Part of the solution is to shower every night before bed, to wash away the pollen that has accumulated throughout the day. This is a problem. Because of the drought, I have serious water guilt; if you listen to the experts, even once-daily showers are more of a luxury than our water supply can handle. And since my workouts are in the morning, I’m faced with an extra dilemma: spend the day feeling sweaty and gross, or go to bed covered in pollen. It’s not a choice that I enjoy making.
4. I miss my bike. The aforementioned pollen problem has really been causing me problems, so much so that I’ve been trying to hide indoors whenever possible. The three days a week that I’m outside coaching baseball lead to some awful nights, but thanks to modern pharmaceuticals I’ve finally managed to mostly shake my allergy-induced cough. I’m hoping for a good rain to clear the air, but the forecast doesn’t look like it’s going to cooperate.
