Training: Off Kilter

Bad Virus, Bad!

Two weeks ago, I had a rockin’ cold. I very rarely get colds at all, but this was a joyous symphony of congestion, sneezing and general malaise. The bike remained parked in the shed because I felt so lousy. And then, about a week into it, the symptoms vanished. Poof! Naturally, I was convinced that this was due to my incredible fortitude and good, clean living.

And then the Tiny Kitchen Assistant got sick. And in classic pediatric illness form, it knocked him out for the entire weekend. Rats, just as I was feeling better, and we were confined to the house. But being a kid, he recovered quickly, and I thought that all was back to normal.

Hahahahahaha.

What actually happened is that my cold retreated into the deep, dark recesses of my sinuses and ears. I spent the entire week feeling like I was listening to the world from underwater, and marveling at the vertigo that happened every time I changed position. Needless to say, the bike stayed parked for yet another week because balance is pretty critical to bike riding.

Now, thanks to strategic medicating, my ears are feeling much better and I’m finally, finally ready to emerge from my cave of illness-related hibernation. I’m also marveling at how the weather has changed so dramatically in just two short weeks. Our warm sunshine has been replaced with mornings in the 40s and crisp, breezy afternoons. At the top of the weekend to-do list: digging the winter wardrobe — sweaters for work and long pants for workouts — from the Rubbermaid bin nestled in the back of my closet.

Now I just need to learn to be an all-season rider.

What are you up to this weekend, and how are you feeling?
