Still No Oven

Waiting for Appliance Delivery

The bad news: my oven still looks like this:

dead-oven

The good news: if the appliance gods smile favorably upon me, I should have a new one by next Thursday.

What do I miss the most? The microwave. I never realized how much I relied on it for dumb stuff. Last night, making waffles for dinner, I needed to melt a tablespoon of butter. I dropped the pat of butter into the little Pyrex dish, walked to where the microwave should be, and stood before it, mildly baffled. Did I really need to dirty an entire pan for a tablespoon of butter? What would my microwaveless mother have done? (First hint: it wouldn’t have involved actual buttermilk. Bisquick doesn’t require melted butter.)

I got around my usual morning microwaved oatmeal by making steel cut oats in the rice cooker. I had leftovers, so I stuck them in a container so I could microwave them la… oh. Right. So much for that plan.

And so I wait, as patiently as possible, and hope that my new appliance doesn’t suck. Fingers crossed that I have something to report by next Friday.

The same thing kept happening to me when we moved in here. Our last two places had built-in microwaves and it wasn’t until I went to use it for some little thing that I realized there wasn’t one here. It took me a week or so to buy one and that entire time, I’d go to warm up leftovers before remembering I’d have to heat them on the stove or eat them cold.

It’s funny how the little things can turn out to be a huge deal. It’s thrown off my rhythm in the kitchen.
