Are you grilling this weekend? I’m talking about charcoal grilling, not firing up the old gas grill. If you’re going to be anywhere near hot coals or a campfire, add the following ingredients to your shopping list and follow along with this photo tutorial.
Ingredients
- Bananas, 1 per person
- Marshmallows, torn in half
- Peanut butter cups, torn into quarters
Instructions
Step 1: Lay out a large swath of foil. This not only acts as a placemat for later work, it’s also used to wrap the banana at the end. (That sounds like a terrible euphemism, doesn’t it?) Use a knife to carefully carve out a section of banana peel that folds back like a flap. Using a spoon, dig out about half of the banana.
Step 2: In the now-open space in the banana, add the marshmallow and peanut butter cup, alternating between the two.
Step 3: Fold the flap of banana skin back over the stuffed goodness, and roll tightly in foil.
Step 4: Twist the ends of the foil, then bend into little hooks. This makes it easier to retrieve the banana boat from the coals. It also makes them look strangely like tiny foil gondolas. Stick the foil gondolas in what’s left of your coals. Leave on coals for 2-5 minutes, depending on how ripping hot your coals are. Flip once.
Step 6: Remove the foil gondolas from the coals. Try to wait the 60 seconds necessary to cool down the banana boats enough to prevent your fingerprints from being seared right off of your fingertips. Or not. Up to you. Unwrap the foil and eat the ooey-gooey goodness with a spoon.
Results
There is no one in their right mind who wouldn’t love this. In deference to anyone who might have a peanut allergy, I see no reason why this wouldn’t work just as beautifully with a straight-up combination of marshmallows and chocolate.
