Training: Walking the Strip

The view of The Strip, from the wedding reception at The Palms.

If the results on my mother-in-law’s pedometer are correct, I walked more in Las Vegas than I did in Walt Disney World. That’s impressive.

The Plan

  • Monday: Gym
  • Tuesday: Off
  • Wednesday: Vegas walking
  • Thursday: Morning run, Vegas walking
  • Friday: Vegas walking
  • Saturday: Vegas walking
  • Sunday: Off

My one Vegas workout featured an early morning run, complete with gusty, swirling winds. I’d been up until 2:13 AM, yet for some reason woke on my own at 7:34 AM, ready to go. After all, how many chances do you get to run from the Sphinx to the Statue of Liberty? The Strip is beautifully empty at that hour, populated solely by other runners, casino employees on their way to work, and jetlagged Europeans. I deliberately kept my run short — only a mile and a half — because I knew the kind of walking that would be done later.

And let me tell you, there was plenty of walking. You know that you’ve given yourself an all-day walking workout when you go to bed at night and you can feel the muscles in your legs and butt. And really, that kind of workout is more pleasant than anything that requires getting up early.

I’m looking at more travel this week, which means that my usual routine will be again disrupted. My goal is to either make it to the gym on Monday or kickboxing on Tuesday, and then pack my running shoes to get me through my days in Washington DC. If you see a tall woman running along the Mall wearing garishly bright tees, wave to me!
