Training: Paging Dr. House

On Monday, I made San Francisco my gym.

I’ve come to the realization that I’ll spend an eternity on the elliptical machine if I’m watching TV at the same time. Oh, USA Network, your reruns of House MD keep me going. Ok, maybe it’s because I have a longtime crush on Hugh Laurie’s sense of humor (A Bit of Fry and Laurie, anyone?), but hey, whatever works. Right?

The Plan

  • Monday: Walking in the city (about 3 miles)
  • Tuesday: Kickboxing
  • Wednesday: Pilates and walking 2.1 miles
  • Thursday: Kickboxing Gym
  • Friday: Gym
  • Saturday: Gym
  • Sunday: Off Hike, gym

I tried to wedge in some exercise wherever possible this week. Monday was a school holiday, so we took the BART to San Francisco and explored, including a stop at the Ferry Building to eat cheese samples from Cowgirl Creamery and watch the ferry depart for Vallejo.

Usually I meet a former colleague at Peet’s once a week. This week, in an effort to beat the Epic Snowstorm that had the Bay Area freaking out, we went for a two-mile walk instead. (Friday afternoon and Saturday, the Epic Snowstorm days, turned out to be bright, sunny and cold.)

On Thursday, my schedule didn’t match up with kickboxing, so I opted for the gym instead. This was where I learned that a little Hugh Laurie can take me a long way. I can tolerate monotony with a little help from scripted television drama.

I again spent a lot of time with the TRX this week, and on Saturday I learned a really obvious TRX lesson: don’t spend 15 minutes exhausting your arms before doing planks and pikes. It’s the quickest and easiest way for your arms to give way, resulting in an unattractive faceplant at the TRX station. Learn from my mistakes, people.

Updated 2/27 PM: Yeah… that plan for a day off? Turns out that I was home alone with a highly energetic 4-year-old. In an effort to burn some of his energy, we went for a 2.7-mile hike on the lower, easier version of the 5-mile hike that I did two weeks ago. He was a champ, but the activity only seemed to rev him up more. By the time bedtime rolled around, I was ready to head off to the gym to burn off my restless energy. I’ll be taking Monday morning off to relax and recover from yet another session with the TRX.
