Some Highs and Lows

On Saturday, my goofing boy managed to swing his sneakered foot just so. It met with my unprotected, sandaled big toe on my left foot, cracking the nail deeper than I imagined possible, and testing my restraint as I managed to avoid unleashing an obscenity-laced tirade at my kid. I’ve managed to do some temporary repair using surgical tape and stretchy 3M elastic tape.

Sunday

Plan: 30 minutes non-run cross-training. Completed: 30 minutes of beach walking.

We spent Sunday at Half Moon Bay, playing beach baseball and soccer, walking in the sand and digging giant holes. Life with a preschooler can be beautifully simple sometimes.

Monday

Plan: 30 minute easy run. Completed: 23 minute run that felt anything but easy.

For as amazing as I’d felt on Saturday, Monday was a tedious slog. If I didn’t know better, I would have guessed that my shoes were filled with lead. I did 23 minutes before throwing in the towel and heading home.

Tuesday

Plan: Team circuit training. Completed: Morning kickboxing; evening Team Circuit Training.

I clearly didn’t learn from my last Tuesday night TNT meeting, and I once again doubled up on workouts today. Kickboxing was a bit challenging, considering that I had to adjust my left foot kick to protect my sore left toe from impact, but I suspect that my new, modified kick is actually closer to the correct form. Maybe this was a blessing in disguise.

Then there was TNT circuit training. It went like this:

  • 1 mile warmup run
  • Set 1
    • Bench step-ups (step onto bench, knee to chest)
    • Push-ups with one leg in the air
    • Snow angels (ab work)
  • Run .5 miles
  • Set 2
    • Mountain climbers
    • Lunge-to-jump
    • Squats to sideways leap
  • Run .5 miles
  • Repeat set 1
  • Run .5 miles
  • Repeat set 2
  • Walk 10 minutes (about .75 miles) to cooldown
  • Stretch

The strangest part? My per-mile time was the best I’ve ever had over that much distance, most likely because I ran the whole time. Granted, it was broken into bits, but I was plenty tired. There’s no doubt that I’ll be feeling this tomorrow.
