Betty Says: What’s With All the Pink?

It's like a pink explosion. How did this happen?

This is my rant about pink.

I’ve never been a particularly girly girl. I spent most of my childhood lamenting the fact that my mother had chosen to wallpaper my room in tiny pastel flowers. I hated wearing skirts and I never, ever wore pink.

Over time, I kind of came around to pink. After all, a nice rosy tone does wonders for brightening the complexion. And then I transitioned to running skirts, which I wear for comfort and proportion; regular running shorts are much too short for my long legs.

Of course, there appears to be an inherent assumption that women — particularly skirt-wearing women — just love pink. Can’t get enough. It appears on nearly all of the offerings of my favorite brand, Skirt Sports. And of course, most manufacturers make pink a primary or secondary color on their women’s running shoes.

When I went to Hawaii, I packed my brightest, most colorful running skirts because hey, it’s Hawaii! I packed my old pink Saucony shoes. And then I polished my nails in a nice, bright, tropical pink.

And then one day, I realized that something dramatic had happened. Pink shoes, skirt, undershorts, nails: I looked like I was an 8-year-old girl outfitted by Hello Kitty.

Even most of the darker bottoms have pink accents.

Maybe I was just being sensitive, I thought. Maybe it wasn’t really that bad. It was Hawaii, after all. Everything is bright and colorful. And then I went to my 5k race and one of the guys said, “That’s one seriously girly outfit. I can’t decide if you’re crazy fast, crazy slow or just plain crazy.”

Well, I’m a middle-of-the-pack kind of girl, neither fast nor slow. I guess that means I’m just plain crazy.

*sigh*

It’s time to overhaul my running wardrobe. Where are the greens and reds? Of course black is a neutral color for bottoms, but what about more grays, navy blues and browns? There’s an entire rainbow of colors out there. Why are the clothes limited to pink and black?

So I’m on a quest for non-pinks. At 6’1″ tall, I stand out enough as it is. I don’t need to play up the girly girl thing any more than I already do.

Anyone have any suggestions for brands or styles that they love?

Totally agree with you on this! And as a golfer, I find women’s golf apparel to be the worst offender! Thanks, I don’t need a pink plaid skort and matching pink shirt and pink socks and pink golf balls.
