Water Safety for Kids

Dive in!

The rapidly approaching Labor Day weekend often means fun getaways to waterfront locations. It seems like a good time for a water safety reminder, compliments of Children’s Medical Center.

Did you know that:

  • Infants (up to 1 year) can drown in as little as one inch of water?
  • Preschoolers (1-5 years) are most likely to drown in swimming pools?
  • School age kids (5-12) are most likely to drown in bodies of water, like oceans or lakes?
  • Adolescents (12-18) can overestimate their skills or act recklessly due to drug or alcohol use?

And don’t forget that it’s always a good idea to know how to perform CPR on both adults and kids. You can find a local CPR class through the American Heart Association, but here are quick printable CPR guides from the University of Washington School of Medicine.
